All children deserve to learn.
But for some, it can be harder because of reading or learning problems.
In regular classrooms, this can make them feel badly about themselves and negatively impact their academic performance.
But there is an awesome resource that can help…
Local zoos and aquariums!
These places are fun and exciting. That helps children with learning difficulties enjoy learning again. They also become excited about the world around them!
Common Struggles and Their Impact
Children with reading and learning problems face many challenges. Dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning issues may make reading, writing, and focusing more difficult. This may make a child feel badly about themselves or not want to learn. Regular schools may not always give the special help these children need to do well in school.
A Unique Solution
Local zoos and aquariums have undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving into dynamic educational havens for children with diverse learning needs. These institutions are no longer mere animal exhibits; they serve as vibrant schools without walls, offering specialized support for children facing challenges in reading and learning.
Unlike traditional classrooms, zoos and aquariums provide engaging, hands-on activities that not only facilitate learning but also kindle a passion for it. They offer a unique educational experience, including interactive activities and access to a wealth of resources, such as books, to captivate young minds and instill a love for learning.
Zoos and aquariums are places where children can explore the wonders of the animal kingdom and receive the assistance, they require to overcome academic hurdles, even offering tutoring to ensure their educational journey is as exciting as it is enriching.
The 2021 Education Study Podcast from Learning Society said that zoos and aquariums have lots of different ways for children to learn like looking, listening, and even touching. This is really helpful for children who have trouble learning.
A Zoo and Aquarium’s immersive environment caters to the ‘see and learn’ curiosity inherent in every child, making the process more engaging, interactive, and memorable.
Educational Technology
Moreover, technological advancements have allowed zoos and aquariums to incorporate educational technology into their programs. Through interactive displays (e.g., touch screens & sensory exhibits), virtual reality experiences, guided audio tours, and online resources, children with reading and learning difficulties can engage with content in a dynamic and immersive manner. They can visualize complex concepts and connect with their learning on a deeper level.
These technologies help reinforce reading skills, enhance vocabulary development, and provide multisensory learning experiences that cater to different learning styles.
Embracing Opportunities

I like that, and PS: it’s not limited to kids! I learn so much every time we visit a zoo or similar place. It starts with the little world maps that indicate where these animals live, charts of what they eat and the like. That way I won’t make a fool out of myself as I attend a game safari. A ranger in South Africa told us the funniest tourists’ questions like:
Do giraffes hunt in packs?
Where do hippo lay their eggs, and can I see a nest?
What time do they feed the whales?
I remember visiting both a zoo and an aquarium while I was in school – elementary school. They were (and still are) fascinating and educational. There is so much to be learned, especially when an animal trainer is conducting an educational lesson or demonstration.
What we can learn from the animals directly is also another fascinating topic as well.
Thanks for sharing.
