Unfolding Potential: Nurturing the Unique Learning Style of Your Child

“Children are not things to be molded, but are people to be unfolded.” – Jess Lair

Every child is like a book with its own story, waiting to be written. When your child faces reading and learning differences, it’s as if some of the pages of their book are stuck together or missing. It’s a challenge that requires your love, attention, and dedication to help them unfold their full potential.

Understanding the Uniqueness

If you’re the parent of more than one child, you already understand that each child is unique.

Many parents, often unknowingly, carry an image of what they want their child to be. This is an unconscious mold based on their hopes, dreams, and sometimes, their unfulfilled ambitions.

It’s a relationship tinged with expectations, resistance, and sometimes, disappointment. All of these can become barriers to celebrating the true, individual essence of your child.

And…

When your child has reading and learning differences, their uniqueness takes on an even greater significance. These difficulties don’t define them; they’re just part of the complex tapestry that makes them who they are.

Your child is not mere clay to be shaped and kneaded into pre-formed silhouettes. He/she is a living, breathing entity, brimming with their own world of ideas, curiosity, and potential.

Empathy and Concern

Imagine what it might be like to be a child facing learning differences. Picture the frustration, the confusion, and the sense of inadequacy that might arise when grappling with reading and learning difficulties.

Your child is not choosing this path; it’s a journey he/she embarks upon, facing hurdles that can be both emotionally and academically taxing.

Children with reading and learning difficulties have their unique way of understanding things, their own pace, and a unique spectrum of aptitude.

They are not defined by their learning difficulties; they are defined by their resilience, their courage, and their unique strengths waiting to be discovered.

As a parent, it’s natural to feel concern and empathy for your child’s struggles. Watching them grapple with reading and learning can be both heart-wrenching and frustrating. You want to see them succeed, but it’s not always easy to know where to start.

What they need most in these challenging times is your understanding, your empathy, and your unwavering support. Recognizing their individual struggles and strengths is the first step to guiding them on their unique learning journey.

Breaking the Mold

Our society often emphasizes conformity, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to mold your child into a predefined shape of success.

But…

Your child is not clay, to be molded into a predetermined form. He/she is like a beautiful flower, blooming in its own time and unique way.

Your concern as a parent must not solely be about fitting your child into a predefined mold of academic achievement but about nurturing their individuality, celebrating their differences, and empowering them to thrive despite their challenges.

Your child is not slow learner, just a different learner.

His/her potential is not lost, it’s just not yet discovered.

Consider this redesignation. It’s not just about semantics; it’s about revolutionizing how you understand your child, how you connect with him/her – how you unfold them.

There’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ when it comes to learning or parenting. It’s about nurturing each child as an individual – respecting their uniqueness, patiently traversing their pace, and gently unfolding their innate potential.

  1. Lifelong learning is the way to go, especially if you learn differently than other people. It gives you the opportunity to be the person that you’re intended to be, to soar high, and to find your magic. Sometimes, the schools can’t do that for you, and you and your family have to find the right people to nurture you and draw your gifts from you. If you’re a parent, please help your child become open to the possibilities. If you’re a teacher and you can see that “diamond in the rough,” you are a gem. Thank you.

    • I wholeheartedly agree with you, Alice. That’s why I seek to empower parents so they don’t need to rely on a school system or tutor to move their child from struggle to success.
