Shaping Young Minds: Parenting Children with Learning and Reading Differences

“Children are like wet cement. Whatever falls on them makes an impression.” ~ Dr. Haim Ginott

Dr. Haim Ginott’s quote beautifully encapsulates the incredible malleability and adaptability of children. Just like wet cement, they are receptive to the influences that surround them, and every experience, every word, every gesture leaves an indelible mark.

As a parent of a child with reading and learning difficulties, let this understanding be a powerful source of hope and motivation.

Your child’s journey may be different, and at times, it may feel like an uphill battle, but remember this: you hold the sculptor’s tools, and it is in your hands to shape his or her impressions and experiences.

Your role is pivotal, and your love, guidance, and support can make all the difference in their development.

Imagine the wet cement as your child’s mind, ready to absorb knowledge, values, and beliefs.

Your words of encouragement, your patience in the face of challenges, and your unwavering belief in their potential act as the patterns and designs that will set in that cement. These impressions will define their self-esteem, their attitude toward learning, and their confidence.

Here are a few concrete ways in which you, as a parent, can ensure that the impressions you leave on your child’s journey are positive and empowering:

  1. Celebrate Small Victories: Every step of progress, no matter how small, deserves recognition and applause.
  2. Embrace Differences: Your child’s learning differences do not define their limitations but rather their unique strengths.
  3. Open Communication: Create a safe and open environment for your child to express their thoughts and feelings. Just like the cement needs space to settle and harden, your child needs room to grow and learn.
  4. Seek Professional Guidance: Sometimes, it takes an experienced hand to guide the sculpting process.

  1. I love this so much.
And yet as I read it I weep a bit. I know that what I’ve let fall onto my children’s cement has not always been uplifting. I pray God will still take it and make something beautiful.

I think your thoughts here are spot on. I appreciate you being willing to share what you have learned.

    Blessings,
    Laurie

  2. Yes, as a homeschooling mom of a child with dysgraphia and an audiology issue, I was grateful that I was able to adapt learning to what served him best! He has gone off to college and has done so well.
