Learning Through Stories

At the parent teacher conference, Kenny’s teacher told his mom that he should read for at least 20 minutes every day. All children love stories but some children hate books. Kenny hated reading books. What should his mom do in that situation?

Many children who learn differently, have trouble reading flat symbols on a page.

The 2-dimensional black shapes on white paper are rather boring to them and have no meaning, compared to the vivid and colorful 3-D images and movies they conjure up so easily in their minds.

Video story books like the one above engage their eyes and their minds.

How do you think your son, daughter, or the child whom you know who has trouble reading because s/he learns differently respond to a video story book?

  1. As much as I love to read and believe that everyone enjoys reading, but sometimes they don’t know it yet, I agree that paper books are not the only way to read. Video storybooks are not only a great way to engage young minds and eyes, but they would probably also be good for older minds and eyes who were turned off reading due to difficulties earlier in life.

    Great post. Thanks.

    • Thanks for commenting, Dr. Wixy. Most of the children with whom I work would love it if all their reading assignments came in the form of video story books. I believe information should be presented to people (children) the way they prefer to take it in.

  2. Hey Florence

    I am back! 😉 hehe

I LOVE your wonderful reminder. Yes, every child – indeed, every PERSON – assimilates information differently. Personally, I ENJOY books, and preferably paper-backed books *touche* BUT video stories are FUN ways to inculcate the habit of learning in a child’s mind, heart and soul.

    Keep writing, dear!

    Love ya

    • Thanks. Like you, krithika, I like printed books. I enjoy underlining with different colored inks and highlighting as I read. My daughter, on the other hand, goes crazy over the video stuff even though she is an avid reader.
