Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus. ~ Alexander Graham Bell
During my elementary school days, the children in my neighborhood enjoyed exploring and experimenting.
Island children relished outdoor lives once daylight lingered. We caught lizards by the tail using flexible grasses tied into slip knots. Earthworms were cut in half to see whether each half would grow into a complete insect. Cats found themselves sailing through the air just to find out if they always landed on their feet. Our creative minds and busy hands continually pursued exciting ventures.
You can surely recall similar childhood exploits and your intense concentration while pursuing them, can’t you?
As we played outside with one of our “investigative” instrument – a magnifying glass, we noticed that on sunny days, it created a lot of heat if we left it in one spot long enough.
I’m sure you know that even though children are not allowed to play with matches, they are always fascinated with fire.
Imagine our excitement when we discovered that we could set paper on fire without matches. The paper burned by simply holding the magnifying glass over it and maintaining that position for a period of time.
The focused energy from the rays of the sun ignited the piece of paper.
Your child’s success comes from a similar process. By teaching them to focus their minds on one thing at a time for a sufficiently long enough period, they can experience outstanding outcomes.
This is a great way to explain how to succeed when struggling. Lia doesn’t struggle in learning but we still have her focus on thing to keep her from getting distracted.
Martha, I admire how you’re raising and training Lia. There are so many things to distract people today, it’s a pity more parents and grandparents do not understand the importance of focusing in life and teaching their children how to focus.
Such a cool analogy! I love your post and upbeat energy around teaching children. Thank you for sharing this simple, yet powerful idea!
Hi Laura, thanks for your kind words. All it takes is a little thought to make learning fun. Children learn best through play.
such a cool (well, hot!) parallel for focus and learning.. Focus is definitely such an important aspect for both learning and doing..
