Learning games have been recognized as an effective approach for supporting children with reading and learning difficulties.
One game that can help improve reading fluency in children with learning difficulties is Reading Racers.
Objective of the Game
The objective of the game is to provide a competitive yet fun platform for playing and learning where children can practice reading skills at their own pace. The prime focus is on word recognition, reading speed, comprehension, and vocabulary building.
Note: Your child is always trying to do better than the last time, thus competing against him/herself.
Mechanics of the Game
“Reading Racers” is a racing game where the players propel their car by reading correctly. This game can be played individually or in groups, promoting both personal skill enhancement and social interaction.
- Each player starts with cards that have short sentences or phrases that are just right for how well they can read. Their race car moves forward when their sentence is read accurately. Three times in a game, the child has the option to use a “pit stop”, where they get specific help.
For group scenarios, players take turns, creating a shared learning environment. It also includes multiplayer options, where teams work together, promoting cooperation and teamwork.
Difficulty Levels
The game offers several difficulty levels, depending on the child’s reading ability:
- Beginner
- Intermediate
- Advanced
As players progress and their reading improves, they will be able to unlock the upper levels, providing a sense of achievement while continually challenging themselves to improve.
Impact on Learning
“Reading Racers” is a fun game that helps children get better at reading. It helps them say words correctly, recognize words quicker, understand what they’re reading better, and learn more words. The game is like a race, which makes it exciting for children. The game gets harder as they play, so they keep learning and pushing themselves. The ‘pit stops’ offer an impromptu learning point, making them more independent in their learning journey.
Game-based learning provides an opportunity for struggling readers to engage with educational content in a fun and interactive way. Learning games have the potential to support and enhance the learning experience for children with reading and learning difficulties.

Wow! What incredible resources. I will share this blog with our Filial Therapist & Parenting Coach as a possible resource for parents. This seems fun and like it could be very supportive to young developing minds.
