Spotlighting Dyslexia: From High School Dropout to Award-Winning, Hall-of-Fame Singer

If you follow your passion, you’ll never work a day in your life. ~Tony Bennett

On August 3, 1926, in the heart of Astoria, Queens, Anthony Dominick Benedetto entered the world. His parents, John Benedetto, a hardworking grocer, and Anna Suraci, nurtured his dreams from the beginning. However, tragedy struck when Tony was just ten years old, as his father died, leaving the family facing uncertain times.

From a young age, Tony’s artistic inclinations shone brightly. He was drawn to the world of art, music, and the power of singing. Yet, life presented him with a formidable challenge…

Dyslexia!

This learning disorder can be an overwhelming hurdle, making it difficult to read, write, and spell accurately. Afflicting around 15-20% of the population, dyslexia knows no boundaries of age or background.

As Tony navigated the trials of school, his dyslexia cast a shadow over his academic performance, leaving him feeling disheartened and frustrated. But within the realm of music, he found solace—a sanctuary that allowed him to conquer the challenges his dyslexia imposed.

Singing became his salvation, providing an outlet for self-expression that words on a page could not capture.

Even as Tony Bennett’s dyslexia presented obstacles, his passion for music propelled him forward. He enrolled at the High School of Industrial Arts in New York City, immersing himself in the world of painting and design. However, financial responsibilities beckoned, and at the tender age of sixteen, Tony made the difficult decision to drop out of school to support his family.

Emerging from the cocoon of Anthony Dominick Benedetto, a legend was born…
