ACE Dyslexia Now: How To Go From Frustration to Success

Dyslexia is no respecter of persons.

“Your daughter cannot be promoted to the third grade!”

I was sitting in the principal’s office listening to her teacher tell me about her helpfulness and creativity, when she said, “Your daughter cannot be promoted to the third grade!” She CANNOT read.

“What! You told me nothing all year.”

Then the flashbacks began:

  • My frustration when the 15-minute homework assignment took over an hour.
  • My helpless feeling when I couldn’t help my child learn.
  • The fear that frequently gripped me when I thought about her future when I am no longer around.

Yes, I knew she had trouble reading, took excessively long to complete her homework, and experienced ongoing difficulty with spelling.

But no one from the school ever contacted me about that.

“Why wasn’t I notified of all the trouble she was having in the classroom?”

She was a brilliant child. I knew it and so did they.

“How will you teach her differently,” I asked.

“I only know one way to teach.” The teacher admitted.

Here was my child – failing – and the school I entrusted with her education DID NOT KNOW how to help her.

I became very troubled.

And sat there… helpless.

That’s when I took matters into my own hands.

“Give me the summer,” I said, “And re-evaluate her in September.”

They agreed.

This galvanized me into action.

We discovered she was dyslexic. So, I figured out a way to work with her at home to reduce the disability aspects of dyslexia.

That September, she was promoted to the 3rd grade.

Over the years, we continued working at home.

Fast forward… She graduated high school as the valedictorian of her class.

Today, I’m no longer frustrated, helpless, or fearful. Instead, I am content, confident, and peaceful that I gave her roots to access learning, and wings to soar to success!

If you’re the parent of a child with dyslexia, and like me back then, you’re frustrated, feel helpless, and are fearful for your child’s future, but want to be like me now, I can get you there.

  1. This is fantastic. You are unlocking the brilliant minds of the children that the schools don’t know how to help. Thank you for being that light for kids to keep them from being trapped in a place full of rejection and lack of understanding.

    • Thank you, Alice, for being such a consistent supporter. I do so appreciate you. May you keep making the world a brighter and better place.
